I often see people complaining that they do not have enough space to store all their clothes in their wardrobe. Many wish they’d have a larger wardrobe such as a walk-in wardrobe with a lot more space and only that would solve this crisis.
However, it is interesting to note that the size of an average wardrobe has significantly increased over the years. So that made me conclude that space is not the real issue—we just need better organization of the existing space.
I was also one of these people not too long ago.
I have a 4-door wardrobe with a whole lot of hanging space. But personally, I don’t prefer to hang everything. And because of that, an entire hanging space was left unused. Every time I opened my wardrobe, I felt bad looking at that empty wasted space—but I just couldn’t come up with any ideas on how to better utilize that space.
Most people deal with this issue by stuffing this area with more hangers and hanging everything. But that’s not always the best solution. Not all clothes are ideal for hanging.
Hence, I decided to write this blog post in the hope that my own experience may help someone in the same predicament.
The best way to utilize the vertical height of a wardrobe is by using smart storage organizers.
Let me show you what has worked beautifully for me and my clients.

1. Stackable Open Shelves
One of the most effective ways to convert unused vertical space into something functional is by using stackable open shelf organizers.
Instead of one large empty section, you instantly create multiple levels of storage.
In the image below, I’ve used stackable plastic shelves inside a wardrobe to neatly store clothes separated by categories. Each shelf acts like a dedicated zone, making everything easy to see and access.
2. These Organisers Are Not Just for Wardrobes
What I love about these stackable shelves is that they are extremely versatile.
In the next example, I’ve used the same organisers outside a wardrobe to store:
Books
Stationery
Art supplies
Miscellaneous items
Each shelf is even labelled, which makes it easier for everyone in the house to maintain the system.

Why this works so well:
No permanent installation required
Makes vertical space usable immediately
Prevents messy piles from toppling over
4. Hanging Handbag Purse Organizer
Women often tend to have multiple handbags and purses- of different sizes and shapes that are meant for different occasions. But when it comes to storing all these bags for easy & quick access, it is usually a big challenge. That's where a hanging handbag purse organizer comes to the rescue.
In the image below, you’ll notice a hanging pocket organizer that beautifully utilizes the vertical height of the wardrobe to store different bags & purses.
Every time you need to choose the right bag to go with your outfit, all your bags are readily visible.
Why I’m highlighting this:
When you invest in organisers like these, you’re buying a versatile system that can be used anywhere in your home.

3. Wire Rack Shelves
If you prefer something lighter visually, wire rack shelves are a great alternative.
In this setup, I’ve used a white wire rack inside the wardrobe to store clothes using Konmari file folding technique, vertically. It keeps everything visible while still creating clear sections for t-shirts, pants, nightwear, handkerchieves, etc.
Best for:
Everyday clothes such as home wear
Items you reach for frequently
Since it’s open, it works well in humid climates (like Goa), as it allows better air circulation.

Final Thoughts
When designing or buying a new wardrobe, most of us think of wardrobes in terms of width—how many shelves, how many compartments.
But the real opportunity lies in thinking vertically.
Instead of saying: “I don’t have enough space”
Try asking: “Am I using the full height of this space?”
That one question can completely change how your wardrobe functions.
You don’t need a bigger wardrobe.
You just need a better system.
Start small. Even adding one stackable organizer can make a noticeable difference.
From my own experience, once you begin using vertical space effectively, your wardrobe not only holds more—but also feels calmer, more functional, and easier to maintain.
